Abstract

This study examined the impact of recruitment and selection methods on employee performance in selected commercial banks in Somalia, with particular reference to Dahabshiil Bank International, Amal Bank, and Premier Bank. The study was contextualized within the Somali banking sector where there is a poor effective recruitment and selection methods that are essential for enhancing employee productivity, promoting ethical conduct, reducing operational risks, and improving organizational performance. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the relationship between candidate sourcing, screening, interviews, and physical examinations and employee performance. A descriptive correlational research design was adopted, employing a mixed-methods approach to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data. Purposive sampling was used to select relevant respondents and key informants, while self-administered questionnaires and interview guides served as the primary data collection instruments. The study findings indicated that effective sourcing attracts qualified candidates, appropriate screening improves job fit, structured interviews support informed hiring decisions, and physical examinations contribute to employee readiness and workplace safety. These recruitment practices are associated with improved productivity, service delivery, employee retention, and organizational effectiveness. The study highlighted the importance of consistent adherence to established recruitment and selection procedures in strengthening human resource management within Somalia’s commercial banking sector. Finally, the study recommended that banks should enhance transparency, standardize recruitment processes, and regularly evaluate hiring practices to ensure that employees possess the qualifications, competencies, and ethical standards required for effective job performance.
